A Hospital for the Soul

As a chaplain, I walk among them daily, witnessing the private agonies of the human soul. People carry wounds—deep, invisible scars etched by life's harshness, fractured relationships, and unspoken grief. They long for refuge, a sanctuary where careless judgment does not lurk behind pious eyes.

On Sundays, they step into church, masked by practiced smiles and rehearsed responses. “I’m fine,” they say, tucking their suffering out of sight. They seek to do the "right thing" while concealing their inner turmoil. Some slip in late and vanish after the final Amen, wary of conversations that might unearth long-buried emotions. Others sit in quiet judgment, unsettled when the visibly broken find their way into the pews beside them.

Yet God sees beyond these masks. He peers into the hidden recesses of the heart, where wounds fester unattended. He knows us far better than we know ourselves. This church is no country club for the righteous, but a hospital for the weary, the lost, and the broken—a place where healing is not only offered but urgently needed.

As chaplain, my role is to walk these halls, to listen without condemnation. Confess your anger, your doubt, your fear—I will not turn away. Bring your true self before God, laying bare your wounds in His presence. Ask for His healing balm, though it may sting as sin is exposed and brokenness is cleansed. But mercy always triumphs over judgment.

All will benefit, even those certain of their spiritual well-being—for we all fall short of the glory of God. We all need His grace.

So come, with open hearts and honest pain. There is room enough for every weary soul. The Great Physician stands ready to bind up the brokenhearted, His hands working not with cold precision, but with redeeming love. Though His tools may cut as He cleanses and restores, His grace alone heals the deepest wounds.
